The Site

Humberston Park is situated three miles from Grimsby Town Centre on a site with Humberston Cloverfields Primary and The Humberston School (Secondary).

We relocated to the Humberston site on July 21, 1995.

The school's building has been completely remodelled with new buildings and additional class areas attached. The landscaping of the outside areas is well underway. There is a safety surface play area with outside apparatus, a horticultural area, a Trim Track, a sensory garden (developed by Barclays Bank) and contained hard playgrounds. We plan to establish wildlife and sensory gardens in the near future.

The Pupils

The school caters for pupils aged 2 - 19 years old, mainly subject to severe learning difficulties although there is a high proportion of children with extensive physical disabilities, complex or profound learning difficulties and additional sensory impairments. All pupils have home to school transport from a catchment area covering a large proportion of what was South Humberside and is now North East Lincolnshire.

The School

There are eight Classes covering Nursery; Primary: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3; Secondary: Class 4, Class 5, Class 6 & Furter Education: 6th Form 1, 6th Form 2. Class bases are age grouped. There is no separate class base solely for pupils subject to 'Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties'. There is a strong emphasis on the corporate management of resources. The Class Team forum is the focus for shared planning and review of individual pupil programmes, timetabling and the implementation of integrated schemes of work. All staff are encouraged to attend and contribute to weekly Teacher or Class Team meetings. Curriculum Teams undertake auditing of resources and implementation relevant to their areas as well as organising small working parties to draft curriculum development material which is then discussed at whole staff levels. The Leadership Group (Head, Deputy, Sensory-Motor Coordinator, Communication and English Team Leader, Cognition and Problem Solving Team Leader and PSHE Team Leader) meet regularly to discuss all aspects of the school's development, organisation and running. Class teachers devise Individual Education Plans which are evaluated biannually. There is a formal annual review on the anniversary of the pupils statement.

The Curriculum

The school is committed to the principle of entitlement and access to a broad balanced and relevant curriculum. Progressive development over the past 4 to 5 years from a soundly behavioural foundation has 'moved' the school in the direction of more balance and variation in methodology. Blending of behaviourist and interactive approaches are reflected in reviewed recording formats and procedures as well as increased ranges of contexts for learning. The National Curriclulm (http://www.nc.uk.net/home.html) is only part of the curriculum at Humberstn Park School. We place great emphasis on Learning to Learn skills, Mobility, Communication and PSHE. There is a school developed Modular PSHE curriculum. Older pupils and students 6th Form 1 & 6th Form 2 use ASDAN (http://www.asdan.org.uk) and ALL accredited modules.
